In my newest piece, I’ve depicted a transformative moment in ancient Egyptian history: the divine revelation of Akhenaten. Titled “Akhenaten in Ecstasy: The Divine Revelation,” this painting captures the instant when the pharaoh experienced a vision of the monotheistic worship of Aten, setting the course for a radical shift in Egyptian religion. Through a unique painting process involving washes of thinned oil paint, the image emerges with an ethereal quality that reflects the spiritual fervor of this pivotal event.
The Painting Process
The creation of “Akhenaten in Ecstasy: The Divine Revelation” began with the application of washes of thinned oil paint. This technique involves swiftly applying diluted paint across the canvas, allowing the image to gradually emerge as the layers build up. The rapid, almost spontaneous application of these washes lends the painting a dynamic and fluid quality, mirroring the sudden and intense nature of Akhenaten’s divine vision. The swift strokes of paint capture the immediacy of the revelation, creating an image that seems to shimmer with the intensity of Akhenaten’s spiritual ecstasy.
The Imagery and Symbolism

A striking feature of the painting is the depiction of Ethereal ram’s horns sprouting from Akhenaten’s head, this was a last minute divinely inspired addition. This imagery draws a parallel to the story of Moses, who, according to some interpretations, was described as having horns of light after encountering the divine. The horns in my painting symbolize Akhenaten’s connection to the divine and his role as a prophet of a new religious order. They also serve to highlight the ecstatic nature of his vision, a moment of intense spiritual revelation that would reshape the religious landscape of Egypt.
Historical Context
Akhenaten, originally known as Amenhotep IV, is a figure of great historical significance due to his radical religious reforms. Abandoning the traditional polytheistic worship of the Egyptian pantheon, he established Aten, the sun disk, as the sole deity. This shift to monotheism was unprecedented and marked a dramatic departure from centuries of religious tradition. Akhenaten’s vision and subsequent reforms not only transformed religious practices but also influenced art, culture, and politics in profound ways.
